The Ancash earthquake occured in 1970. It was also known as the great Peruvian earthquake. It happened on May 31 off the coast of Peru in the Pacific Ocean. Combined with the landslide it created, it was the worst natural disaster in Peruvian history. It was a magnitude 7.9 earthquake. It affected an area of 83,000 square kilometers.
